Free floating a barrel (in theory) eliminates any outside forces that may press on the barrel effecting the harmonics of the barrel and it's accuracy. The composite stocked ones are not.

Recently i've heard people talking about free floating the barrel and others talking about bedding it.

Free floating barrel vs bedded. Bedding the barrel is like trying to tune the barrel with a tuner only you can't adjust it. With barrel expansion due to heat, stock dimensional changes due to heat or moisture, the fit of the barrel in the channel may be different for each shot which means it starts the dynamic process from different initial conditions. My question is which is better and why.
We have found through our testing that barrels having a smaller outside diameter than our #3 contour require upward pressure to help stabilize the barrel for increased accuracy. I can't say it's any more accurate. Traditional bolt action rifles often have the barrels bedded, that is the barrel makes contact with the full length of the stock.
It's really hit and miss on if it will help. If not, you might look elsewhere for improvement. If not for a double standard democrats would have no standards at all.
Free floating the barrel involves removing all wood or plastic along the barrel channel so that the barrel has no contact points with the barrel to interrupt its natural whip. That is why free floating is much better than full length bedding. The barrel to stock gap should be large enough to avoid touching the barrel under all conditions as well as under recoil.
If you do load development then you free float all the way and you will always get better results. Most modern sporting arms (ar15’s at10’s sig mcx mpx and many others usually always have free floating barrels. Coat the inside of your stock, barrel channel, action mortise, and under the butt pad with polyurethane.
They bedded the barrel because they were afraid that long heavy barrel would cause the action and/or the stock to flex. If a new rifle is designed from the ground up to have a free floating barrel like the stevens 200 with pillar bedding that is one thing. I am only using it for squirrels and small game and some friendly backyard competition.
Mn barrel is relatively thin. 1911tuner's observation is consistent with this. It destroys repeatability and zero of the barrel.
What are the advantages of full length bedding vs. With a heavy contour barrel used for target shooting and competition, always free float the barrel. Just enough to support the barrel.
You must be able to pass at least 3 (some recommend 5) dollar bills (or, sheets of printer paper works, too), stacked together, between the barrel and the forend, all the way to the end of the chamber (where the fattest part of the barrel meets the reciever). Both my wood stocked bolt rifles are action glass bedded and barrels free floated. Our free floated barrels have enough rigidity in.
It contacts the barrel over most of its length. I personaly like to glass bed the aluminum action block and free float the barrel. A well bedded rifle with free floating barrel is a much better way of reducing the influence of varying pressures on the stock from outside which occur when resting the rifle on a bag/bipod or even just holding the forend.
A good heavy barrel can make a world of difference. But a new remington 700 adl does not have piller bedding or a free floating barrel and was designed to have 3 to 9 pounds of up pressure at the fore end tip. If no, you can bed it.
Originally, it was free floated all the way back to the barrel shoulder. All the above that i have said is for people who shoot factory ammo. And adjustable to 2½ lbs.
I got good results this way. Other rifle designs will have differences in the ways you approach the bedding. On the other hand, glass bedding increases stock life.
The first step is to ensure the barrel is free floating. An example would be a change of moisture in a wooden stock (rainy day vs dry day) which may change the amount of preassure the stock has on the barrel, and change the poi. Sometimes it does sometimes it's doesn't.
Later, after a rifle maker turned the shoulder down as one of his weight reduction tricks, he glass bedded the barrel all the way out the barrel channel. Personally i think its a great if possible to have the barrel floated vs a. Most rifles that are glass bedded have the barrel free floated also,,,a strip of tape is placed on the bottom of the barrel during glass bedding and when removed after the bedding compound has hardened,,the barrel does not touch the bedding itself but is free floated,,,only the action is bedded so that it does not move during firing.semper fi
If it improves, you have a candidate for free floating. The heavier the barrel and the less points of contact it makes with the stock means that the mussel arc will be smaller and groups will be tighter. For original 28 long barrel, just a couple of shots and group consistency goes to hell.
With a floated barrel like the 10/22 with aftermarket stock i bedded the rear third of the receiver and with a pillar under the action i bedded the first couple inches of barrel ahead of the v block, this imo was the perfect combination for a floated 10/22. With a light contour barrel which is primarily used for hunting, bedding the barrel somewhere near the forearm tip will sometimes aid in accuracy. This pillar bedded polymer stock is reinforced with fiberglass, providing rigidity and allowing the barrel to remain free floating.
Free floating is what it sounds like. If i shorten the barrel to 22 or less, i can free float it and get good consistency even when barrel gets hot. The stock is plastic and it has the barrel clamp on it also.
Why are some weatherby rifles “free floated” and some are not? This means that the barrel must not touch the forend at any point. A less stiff barrel will become effectively stiffer when mated to a perfect bed.
As the barrel warms up from repeated shots, the zero tends to wander. The question should be a free floating barrel versus a bedded barrel. The only point of contact should be the bedding under the barrel parallel closest to the chamber.
The more points of pressure and the further up the barrel the greater the vibrational arc will be when the rifle fires.
